Shea Butter in a jar

Shea Butter and Flaxseed Cream

Making your own DIY Shea butter and Flaxseed cream is a win-win because it is free of preservatives and full of extra goodness that your hair will love.

It is also a good product to add to your shelf, should you want to learn how to better care for your afro-textured hair

Use

The Shea butter and Flaxseed cream can be used in the following ways:-

🌺As a moisturizing cream in your LOC/LCO routine.

🌺As an addition to your pre-poo treatment.

🌺As a defining cream for twist-outs and other natural hairstyles.

Ingredients

  • X3 tablespoons of homemade Flaxseed gel (medium gel-like consistency)
  • X1 cup of Shea Butter
  • X2 Tablespoons of preferred essential oil (lavender, almond, etc)
  • Spatula
  • Zip lock bag
Optional:  X1 Tablespoon of Vitamin E for anti-oxidising properties.

Instructions

1. Pour the flaxseed gel into a mixing bowl and then add a cup of shea butter to a separate Pyrex glass.

2. Prepare the shea butter using the double melting method. Bring a saucepan of water to a boil, before letting it simmer, then place the Pyrex glass in the saucepan to melt the butter.

3. Once melted, mix the shea butter with the gel and whisk the mixture together for 10 – 15 minutes until you have a thick, smooth, whipped cream-like consistency. Optional: You can add the essential oils and Vitamin E to the mixture as well.

4. Then using a plastic spatula, scoop the mixture into a sanitized zip lock bag  and pack it in.

5. When filled, seal the bag tightly, cut one end of the bag, and squeeze it over a glass jar to transfer the cream neatly into the storage container.

It is now ready for use.

Storage & shelf life

The curling cream lasts about 7 – 10 days, so store it in the fridge when not in use.

You can freeze the leftover cream in the freezer (using ziplock bags) and defrost it to use as and when needed.

Nahazo tip

🌺To sterilize your container and ziplock bags, put alcohol in a spray bottle and spray the container, before wiping it down and letting it air dry.

🌺Keep a paper and pen handy to mark the date as you use each batch.

Hair Byte

You can add essential oils to the mixture to delay spoiling when exposed to air, as they are anti-oxidants. However, NOTE that essential oils are not preservatives, and adding them to your mixture will not increase the shelf life.

Your mixture will still go bad after a certain period, so you should make the mixture in small batches, freeze, and then use as and when needed.
